1. Introduction

Bhagat Singh (September 27, 1907 - March 23, 1931) was an Indian Sikh freedom fighter, considered to be one of the most famous martyrs of the Indian independence movement. For this reason, he is often referred to as Shaheed Bhagat Singh (the word shaheed means "martyr"). He is also believed by many to be one of the earliest Marxists in India and has been labelled so by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) .He was one of the leaders and founders of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. Its been nearly 80 years since Bhagat Singh dropped a small bomb onto the floor of Parliament House's Central Assembly Hall to “make the deaf hear”. On August 15, 2008 in New Delhi, India, an important ceremony was held to unveil a huge statue of Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s. This now proudly stands just outside Parliament House in courtyard number 5 in New Delhi. To celebrate India's day of Independence, a cause to which Bhagat Singh had dedicated his life, the larger than life statue (18 feet/6 metres high) was unveiled by President of India, Pratibha Patil, to a long deserved welcome.
